Joe Benson
The Alabama Division held its annual board meeting in Montgomery,
Alabama, on October 27, 2006. At the meeting,
the executive board of the Alabama Division
presented Sgt. Joe Benson of the Mobile Police
Department as the Alabama PBA Member of the Year
for 2006-2007. Sgt. Benson is the senior vice
president of the Mobile County Chapter and has
served in this capacity for a number of years.
Sgt. Benson was recognized for his many years of
continued loyalty and dedication to his local
chapter and his effectiveness in serving in this
leadership position.Sgt. Joe Benson has exhibited extraordinary accomplishments, demonstrating leadership, creativity, and support of Alabama PBA goals. He has displayed loyalty and dedication to the organization by demonstrating integrity in all aspects of performance. He approaches new challenges and responsibilities delegated by the chapter president with a “can do” attitude and, as Division President Scott noted during his presentation speech, Sgt. Benson’s willingness to serve and his abilities to perform at an extremely high level have allowed President Scott to fulfill and expand the potential of the Alabama PBA as well as the Mobile County Chapter.
As chairperson of the Grievance Committee, Sgt. Benson utilizes creative as well as critical thinking in problem solving. He also has demonstrated excellence in teaching, training, educating, and mentoring both in his capacity as a supervisor and as a PBA member. He encourages peers and co-workers to work diligently to accomplish the organization’s goals and creates a positive team environment that serves as a role model for others. He treats others with dignity and respect, thereby enhancing harmony and cooperation among PBA members. He plays an integral role in political activities involving the PBA by walking the streets and putting out campaign signs, by knocking on doors, and by taking PBA’s message to the politicians and reminding them again and again of law enforcement’s needs and problems.
The Alabama PBA Member of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has distinguished himself in the organization, in his profession, and in the community. With more than 20 years in the law enforcement profession, Sgt. Joe Benson exemplifies the best in our profession and uses his talents to help other police officers be their very best.
